Chatbase alternatives for website and WhatsApp chatbots

Botpress, Voiceflow and Retell AI chat agents vs Chatbase on price, message limits, WhatsApp and website training. Checked September 2026.

Short answer: pick Botpress if you want more control over the conversation and WhatsApp on a free plan. Pick Retell AI if the same business needs a phone agent too, because it runs chat and voice from one knowledge base and charges per message. Look at Voiceflow if you are an agency building many client bots. If the problem is wrong answers, look at what the bot was trained on before you move, because that problem comes with you.

Figures below are from each company's own pages, checked on 21 September 2026.

Where Chatbase stands

Chatbase is the fastest way to get a chatbot trained on a business: point it at the website, add files, and it's live. Its plans on the day we checked:

PlanPrice a monthMessage creditsAgentsTraining data
Free$05011 MB
Hobby$40700210 MB
Standard$1504,000320 MB
Pro$50015,000540 MB
EnterpriseContact salesCustomUnlimitedHigher limits

Yearly billing takes 20% off, and extra credits are $40 per 1,000. An agent can be trained from files, websites, text, Q&A pairs, Notion pages and support tickets. With auto-retrain switched on, it retrains every 7 days to pick up changes. Voice and telephony start on the Standard plan, and removing the Chatbase branding is $99 a month.

People usually leave over one of three things. The credits run out on a busy site. Agencies hit the agent limit (two on Hobby, three on Standard, then $25 a month each). Or the bot confidently gives a wrong price.

Botpress: more control, WhatsApp included

Botpress counts conversations instead of messages. A conversation is "any exchange with at least two messages from the end user in the billing month". The free plan includes 25 a month, 3 seats and 3 agents. Plus is $150 a month billed yearly and includes 250 conversations, $25 of AI usage, unlimited agents, a white-label web chat and live support. Extra conversations cost $0.65 each on Plus. Team is $750 a month for 1,500 conversations. WhatsApp and web chat come with the Free and Plus plans. Voice is Enterprise only. Its knowledge base takes a website (give it a domain and it finds the pages), documents up to 50 MB, tables, pasted text, web search, and Notion or Google Drive through integrations.

Pick it if you want to design the flow as well as the answers, you build for Indian businesses that live on WhatsApp, or you need several agents without paying per agent.

Retell AI: chat and voice from one knowledge base

Retell is best known for phone agents, but it also runs chat agents from $0.002 a message, with no monthly fee on the self-serve tier. Chat and voice share the same knowledge base. It can crawl a whole website and refresh it every 24 hours, or sync from files, Google Drive, OneDrive and Notion. The first 10 knowledge bases are free and each one after that is $8 a month.

Pick it if the business answers phones as well as a website chat, and you don't want two sets of knowledge to keep in step.

Voiceflow: for agencies building many bots

When we checked, Voiceflow's pricing page described usage-based billing and a free trial with no credit card, but didn't list plan prices. It pitches directly to agencies and partners. Get a quote before you plan around it.

Pick it if you manage many client bots and want a platform that sells to agencies directly. Ask how its usage billing works out across your client list.

The wrong-answer problem travels with you

Chatbase, Botpress and Retell all do the same thing with a website. They cut it into chunks and hand the model the closest few when a customer asks something. Take a salon's price list: "Haircut 600, Colour 2,500, Keratin 4,500", spread across a table. It can end up with a price in one chunk and the service name in another. The bot reads out the number it was given, and it does so in writing, where the customer can screenshot it.

So before you migrate, fix the source. Every sentence with a price should name the service. Services should be listed by name, with no prices in the list. Where two pages disagree, settle it before the bot sees both. How to write a chatbot knowledge base goes through each step.

KB Builder turns a client's website into that kind of file, a Markdown document that trains Chatbase, Botpress or Retell equally well, plus a list of what the website never says.

Once you've chosen: set up its knowledge base properly

Each platform stores and searches a knowledge base differently: what files it takes, how many pieces it hands the agent per turn, and whether the agent searches at all without being told. Our setup guides cover that from each platform's own documentation, with the prompt lines we add after our own live calls:

KB Builder is made by MasterBlocks, which also makes SpeakEdge, a voice agent platform. We are not affiliated with any platform named here.

Common questions

What is a good alternative to Chatbase?

Botpress if you want to design the conversation and put the bot on WhatsApp, including on its free plan. Retell AI if the same business also needs a phone agent, since Retell runs chat and voice from one knowledge base. Voiceflow if you are an agency building many client bots in one workspace.

Is there a cheaper alternative to Chatbase?

It depends on how you count. Chatbase's Hobby plan is $40 a month for 700 message credits. Botpress's free plan includes 25 conversations a month, and its Plus plan is $150 a month for 250 conversations. Retell prices chat from $0.002 per message with no monthly fee. Checked 21 September 2026.

Which Chatbase alternative works on WhatsApp?

Botpress includes WhatsApp on its Free and Plus plans. Chatbase itself also integrates with WhatsApp.

Why does my Chatbase bot give wrong prices?

Usually because it was trained on the website as written. A price table gets cut into chunks, and a chunk can hold a price with no product name, so the bot attaches it to whatever the customer asked about. Changing platforms won't fix that. Rewriting the source so every price sentence names its product will.
